    Sidelights on Relativity (Illustrated Edition)

This 56-page Dover edition offers two lectures by Albert Einstein, “Ether and the Theory of Relativity” and “Geometry and Experience”. The lectures are described as “devoid of complicated equations and abstruse terminology”. Nonetheless, while the reader does benefit from Einstein’s clarity of thought, these lectures do require careful attention. The first lecture presumes familiarity with physics; the second is largely a discussion of non-Euclidian geometry and is easier reading.br /br / Ether and the Theory of Relativity, an address delivered on May 5, 1920 at University of Leyden: br /br / Einstein recounts how the concept of ether originated and subsequently evolved. After some discussion of work by Hertz, Maxwell, Lorentz, and Mach, he notes that it became possible to take a position that ether does not exist. However, using an analogy of water waves, he explains that although the special theory of relativity does forbid us to assume ether consists of particles observable through time, the hypothesis of ether in itself is not in conflict with the special theory of relativity. Only we must give up ascribing a motion to it. br /br / While it may seem superfluous to postulate a homogeneous, isotropic, ether-medium, Einstein contends that to deny the ether is ultimately to assume that empty space has no physical qualities at all. He then argues that according to his General Theory of Relativity “empty space” in its physical relation is neither homogeneous nor isotropic, compelling us to describe its state by ten functions (the gravitational potentials). There can be no space or part of space without gravitational potentials. br /br / After noting that elementary particles may be considered condensations of electromagnetic fields, he concludes that our current view of the universe presents two realties which are completely separated from each other conceptually, although connected casually, namely gravitational ether and electromagnetic field, or as they might be called, space and matter. br /br / Geometry and Experience – an expanded form of an address to the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin on January 27, 1921:br /br / Einstein begins by posing and answering why mathematics, a product of human thought, is so admirably appropriate to describing reality. In exploring limitations associated with applying Euclidian geometry to relations between rigid bodies, Einstein introduces other axiomatic systems, including Riemann’s geometry. He argues that there are difficulties in applying geometry on the sub-molecular level, but it is less problematical to extend the ideas of geometry to cosmic orders of magnitude.br /br / After some clarification of the meaning of a finite universe and an infinite universe, he devotes several pages to illustrating how to visualize a finite, three dimensional universe that is unbounded. Einstein concludes this lecture with an enthusiastic comment: “My only aim today has to show that the human faculty of visualization is by no means bound to capitulate to non-Euclidian geometry.”

    Sense and Sensibility

One of the Dashwood daughters is smart, down-to-earth and sensible. The other is wildly romantic and sensitive. br /br /And in a Jane Austen novel, you can guess that there are going to be romantic problems aplenty for both of them — along with the usual entailment issues, love triangles, sexy bad boys and societal scandals. “Sense and Sensibility” is a quietly clever, romantic little novel that builds up to a dramatic peak on Marianne’s romantic troubles, while also quietly exploring Elinor’s struggles. br /br /When Mr. Dashwood dies, his entire estate is entailed to his weak son John and snotty daughter-in-law Fanny. His widow and her three daughters are left with little money and no home. br /br /Over the next few weeks, the eldest daughter Elinor begins to fall for Fanny’s studious, quiet brother Edward… but being the down-to-earth one, she knows she hasn’t got a chance. Her impoverished family soon relocates to Devonshire, where a tiny cottage is being rented to them by one of Mrs. Dashwood’s relatives — and Marianne soon attracts the attention of two men. One is the quiet, much older Colonel Brandon, and the other is the dashing and romantic Willoughby. br /br /But things begin to spiral out of control when Willoughby seems about to propose to Marianne… only to abruptly break off his relationship with her. And during a trip to London, both Elinor and Marianne discover devastating facts about the men they are in love with — both of them are engaged to other women. And after disaster strikes the Dashwood family, both the sisters will discover what real love is about… br /br /At its heart, “Sense and Sensibility” is about two girls with completely opposite personalities, and the struggle to find love when you’re either too romantic or too reserved for your own good. As well as, you know, the often-explored themes in Austen’s novels — impoverished women’s search for love and marriage, entailment, mild scandal, and the perils of falling for a sexy bad boy who cares more for money than for true love… assuming he even knows what true love is. br /br /Austen’s formal style takes on a somewhat more melancholy flavor in this book, with lots of powerful emotions and vivid splashes of prose (“The wind roared round the house, and the rain beat against the windows”); and she introduces a darker tone near the end. Still, there’s a slight humorous tinge to her writing, especially when she’s gently mocking Marianne and Mrs. Dashwood’s melodrama (“They gave themselves up wholly to their sorrow, seeking increase of wretchedness in every reflection that could afford it”). br /br /And Marianne and Elinor make excellent dual heroines for this book — that still love and cherish each other, even though their polar opposite personalities frequently clash. What’s more, they each have to become more like the other before they can find happiness. There’s also a small but solid supporting cast — the hunting-obsessed Sir John, the charming Willoughby (who has some nasty stuff in his past), the emotional Mrs. Dashwood, and the gentle, quiet Colonel Brandon, who shows his love for Marianne in a thousand small ways. br /br /”Sense and Sensibility” is an emotionally powerful, beautifully written tale about two very different sisters, and the rocky road to finding a lasting love. Not as striking as “Pride and Prejudice,” but still a deserving classic.

The Garden of the Finzi-Continis [VHS]

‘The garden of the Finzi-Continis’ has many elements which are aesthetically pleasing. The music has the lushness of a sad but beautiful nostalgia, while the cinematography is likewise gorgeous, but also gives an impression of mellowness and melancholy. Both musical and visual qualities contribute significantly to the feeling of the end of an era, an end which is fated to play out attended by great sorrow.br /br /Most people, I’m sure, will recognize that the setting of the film – 1938 Italy under the Fascist dictatorship of Mussolini – guarantees that this is not a film likely to inspire happiness, particularly when the main characters are Jewish. And, true to what might be expected, it is an ultimately depressing story.br /br /As I watched the film, I asked myself what the director was trying to accomplish with his presentation, other than to deliver it with impeccable artistry. The Finzi-Continis, a fabulously wealthy Jewish family were highly cultured and conducted their lives almost as aristocrats. To outsiders, Jew and non-Jew alike, they would have represented the pinnacle of the good life. br /br /That the Finzi-Contini’s wealth may have generated it’s own vulnerabilities seems to be symbolically illustrated in the characters of the two siblings, Micol and Alfredo. Micol, having enjoyed the privileges of her family’s position throughout her youth, has grown into a capricious and willful young woman. Although she appears to be good at heart, she is aloof, and even cruel and deceitful, toward the young Jewish man from a lower social position who has tried to pay court, eventually having an affair with his friend , who isn’t Jewish. This suggests she has reached the epitome of upward mobility, and unable to respond to the advances of a social inferior, looks for gratification in a liaison with someone completely outside her traditional culture. Her brother, Alfredo, is an effeminate young man who seems to feel an attraction to her lover. He is in delicate health, and in fact, is suffering from a terminal illness. The self-indulgence of Micol and the weakness of Alfredo seem to foreshadow the collapse of the way of life which has nurtured them.br /br /The irony of the situation is that while the various characters are enacting their personal dramas, there is a much more comprehensive and inhuman process enacting itself around them, which will soon swallow up all these individual lives, rendering all their dreams and aspirations invalid. While the Fascist’s persecution of Jews is shown as the evil thing it is, it’s hard to escape the suspicion that the film is also telling us, in the case of the Finzi-Continis, that people whose affluence becomes so disproportionate to that of others may be exhausting their viability. The portrayal of the middle-class Jewish family of Micol’s would-be suitor is portrayed more sympathetically, showing their strong sense of solidarity and loyalty to tradition. De Sica’s earlier film, “The Bicycle Thief”, suggests that he felt a strong sympathy for the plight of the working poor, and strongly implied the need for social remedies; which contributes to my feeling that he viewed the elevated position of the Finzi-Continis with less than approval.br /br /If De Sica intended a meaning to his film beyond simply being a realistic depiction of the travails wrought on his characters by the political events of the time, it seems to me he might have had several purposes: To dutifully acknowledge the evils of Italian Fascism under Mussolini, to point out the decadence produced from great personal fortunes, and to show that such wealth is no guarantee of safety when great social upheavals take place. This does not mean the film plays like a sermon. It is a well-crafted and interesting drama but, as previously noted, it will most likely bring you down.
